NATAS Honors New England Broadcasting Legends
Selects Five for 2007 Silver Circle and One for Gold Circle Induction

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Boston/New England Chapter announced that Jack Hynes, Henry Becton, John Ghiorse, Dr. Mel Goldstein, Peter Mehegan and Liz Walker will be its 2007 Gold and Silver Circle inductees. These New England television pioneers will be honored for their lasting contributions to the industry during a gala celebration at the Harvard Club Downtown on November 29.

“This venerable group of television greats set the gold standard for broadcasting in New England and throughout the world,” said Timothy T. Egan, President of the NATAS Boston/New England Chapter.  “Their careers have set the tone for quality journalism and worthwhile programming in  the New England marketplace. We’re honored to induct them into the Gold and Silver Circle.”

Silver Circle members are honored for making an enduring contribution to the vitality of the television industry.  Established in 1993, the Silver Circle honors television professionals who have performed distinguished service within the industry for more than twenty-five years.

Fifty years of excellence in the television industry is a tremendous achievement and the establishment of the Gold Circle represents the Chapter’s recognition of this remarkable feat.  The following are this year’s inductees to the Silver and Gold Circle:

THE 15th SILVER CIRCLE AWARD HONORS

Following 37 years with WGBH and 23 as its President, Henry Becton, Jr. stepped aside this year.   During his remarkable tenure, Becton oversaw the creation and production of: Frontline. Nova, Arthur, This Old House, American Experience, Masterpiece Theatre, Zoom, Antiques Roadshow, Vietnam: A Television History, Africans in America, The Victory Garden, Evening at Pops, The World and many other history changing programs.

The list of WGBH’s public broadcasting milestones goes on and on, as do the accolades—including a special Peabody in 2002 “for 50 years of service to the community, the nation, and the world with outstanding productions and collaborations.” No single individual has been more responsible for WGBH’s extraordinary achievements through the years than Henry Becton, Jr., who has guided WGBH to national prominence as a production powerhouse and technological innovator.

John Ghiorse has been a trusted meteorologist for more than 35 years in the Providence- New Bedford market. John joined Weather Team 10 on March 16, 1998, it marked Johns return to WJAR, where he had served as meteorologist from 1968 to 1983 John began his career in weather casting in 1966 at WTIC (now WFSB) in Hartford, CT following his 15-year stay at WJAR, he served as chief meteorologist at WLNE in Providence.

Dr. Mel Goldstein is currently sforecasting the weather for Connecticut viewers on News Channel 8 from 5:00-7:00 a.m. and News Channel 8 at Noon.  A popular meteorologist, Mel’s media career began with a single radio station, and by 1976 his broadcasts were on dozens of radio stations nationwide. He then began doing television and in the 1980’s, his forecasts were seen across the country on the Satellite News Channel, an all-news cable effort of ABC and Westinghouse. He became the Chief Meteorologist at WTNH-TV in 1986.

Peter  Mehegan has been traveling the region’s “Main Streets and Back Roads” for more than 25 years hosting Chronicle, the longest running local news magazine program on American television.  Before joining Chronicle in 1982, Mehegan worked the news side of the business for many years, starting as a news writer and reporter for the old Yankee Network (WNAC) in Boston while he was still finishing his broadcasting degree at Boston University in 1964. From there, it was on to WMEX radio for a year and then to Boston s WBZ-TV where he was originally hired as a news editor and writer in 1967. Shortly thereafter, management realized they had a journalist in their midst and Mehegan went on the air as one of the station’s top general assignment reporters and anchors.  WCVB-TV lured Mehegan away from WBZ-TV in 1981 and asked him to co-anchor newscasts with Mary Richardson who had just joined the station and broadcast history was made in 1982 when the station launched Chronicle.

Award-winning journalist Liz Walker is Host and Executive Producer of Sunday With Liz Walker, a half hour newsmagazine airing Sundays at 11AM on WBZ-TV. She recently completed the film “A Glory from the God”, a documentary about a women’s inspiring leadership in the movement against genocide in Sudan. Walker joined WBZ in April 1980 and went on to anchor the station’s evening newscasts for almost 20 years before moving to the dayshift in June 2000 to spend more quality time with her family.  Walker began her broadcasting career in 1974 in her hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas, where she was the Director of Public Affairs for KATV.  She later moved to KMGH-TV in Denver, where she served as weekend anchor and reporter, specializing in investigative consumer affairs and the court beat.  Prior to joining WBZ-TV, Walker worked for KRON-TV in San Francisco as a reporter and early morning anchor, and host of the daily magazine program “Midday.”
